Favourite Female Characters

Happy International Womens Day!

I thought I'd celebrate the day by posting a little on a few of my favourite fictional female characters in YA . This list isn't a conclusive list but just a few of the fictional women I hold dear to my heart. Click the covers to see my reviews!

Geek Girl (Geek Girl, #1) Harriet - Geek Girl

Harriet from the Geek Girl series is one of the most relate-able, funny and heart warming characters I've ever read.  Harriet is dramatic, intelligent, a loyal and good friend and also a caring person. She shows that not only can you be incredibly intelligent and then become a model, but you can do all of this and still remain true to your roots and own your geek-iness!

Georgia Nicholson - Confessions of Georgia Nicholson series

Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging (Confessions of Georgia Nicolson, #1)Georgia is one of the most dramatic, over the top, outrageous character....ever. She attracts drama and makes silly mistakes but this is one of the sides to her that makes her so relate-able. Georgia is a loyal friend, although she can stray and be selfish at times, but this all makes her so much more realistic.

Georgia is such an iconic, laugh out loud character that once you read you will never forget. She is strong willed, opinionated, dramatic but also strong. She goes through a lot of growth over the series but still at the end she is the same Georgia the reader has come to know and love.

Arya Stark - A Song of Ice & Fire Series

A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1)Arya is such an interesting character. She is definitely more of a tomboy in comparison to the previous girls on the list. She is also probably the youngest on this list. Arya lives in a very dangerous and adverse world that would especially be dangerous for her as a girl. But Arya is strong, self motivated, independent and determined to shape her own future and constantly move forward and survive.

Arya is not your typical girl but she does have a lot of aspirational characteristics that female readers can look up to and take some sort of inspiration from. Definitely one of the best characters in  the series.

Evie - Am I Normal Yet?

Am I Normal Yet? (The Spinster Club, #1)Evie is a character that you immediately take into your heart. Bourne has a skill for creating characters that are so real to the reader that they almost come to see them as a friend rather than a fictional character.
Evie suffers from mental illness but she does not let this define her as she sets out to make her way without the knowledge of her history shadowing their perceptions of her. Evie is naive at times but she goes through a lot of experiences that a lot of readers could identify with. She also has one of the best groups of friends in fiction I have ever read (Spinster Club 4ever) and the love of film and feminist rants also make for excellent reading. Evie is definitely a character you will wish was your best friend as you read!

                        Mika- Fish Out Of Water

Fish Out of WaterMika is a great character. She is a good friend, motivated, passionate, interesting, self opinionated, independent, strong and fun. She loves her job working in the pet shop and has a strong passion for caring for fish.
Her passions and self driven motivation are all traits that readers, both male and female, can identify with or aspire to also find something that they are passionate about to make them motivated to succeed. A brilliant novel, I highly recommend.

Toria - All Of The Above

All of the AboveToria is one of my favourite characters ever. She is one of the most real, raw and three dimensional characters I have ever read. She goes through a lot in the novel that many readers can relate / identify with.
She is introverted but through the novel she grows to become more outspoken and happier in her own skin. Toria becomes her own person by the end of the novel, she becomes someone you would want as a friend. She is strong, intelligent, introverted and caring.

Luna Lovegood - Harry Potter

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Harry Potter, #1)Luna is one of my favorite characters of all time because she is so apologetically herself! She is quirky and quite different that anyone else in her school and even though she is sometimes ridiculed and left out because of this, she does not change who she is to please people. Luna owns her differences because she knows that that is who she is and she is happy being herself- even if it means standing out in a big way.
Luna is definitely a character readers can take inspiration from to be themselves and not change who they are to please others. Luna is also a kind friend to Harry and her other friends and is witty and intelligent.

Prim Improper (Prim, #1) Prim - Prim Series

Prim is an amazing character. To see her growth over the course of the trilogy was incredible- almost as if she were a real person you were watching grow up and not one whose story you were reading in a couple of hours.

Prim is naive, angry, determined, unique, funny and intelligent. She has a great set of friends that she is incredibly loyal to and she always makes up her own min about a situation. She is opinionated and incredibly intelligent too. She is an utter delight to read that will make you wish there were more than just 3 novels about her!

Hope you have had a great International Women's Day! Let me know some of your favourite fictional ladies in the comments below.

  1. I do like Arya, but I also put myself firmly on the Sansa Stark defense squad. Just because they are two different women, doesn't mean they have to be at odds. Also Katniss and Cinder, among others, as girls who have to take up a mantle of leadership they weren't prepared for. I also appreciate Starr from The Hate U Give for navigating a tough situation.
