Review: Don't Even Think About It by Sarah Mlynowski

Plot: Contemporary teen fiction with romance, secrets, scandals, and ESP from the author of Ten Things We Did (And Probably Shouldn't Have).

We weren't always like this. We used to be average New York City high school sophomores. Until our homeroom went for flu shots. We were prepared for some side effects. Maybe a headache. Maybe a sore arm. We definitely didn't expect to get telepathic powers. But suddenly we could hear what everyone was thinking. Our friends. Our parents. Our crushes. Now we all know that Tess is in love with her best friend, Teddy. That Mackenzie cheated on Cooper. That, um, Nurse Carmichael used to be a stripper.

Since we've kept our freakish skill a secret, we can sit next to the class brainiac and ace our tests. We can dump our boyfriends right before they dump us. We know what our friends really think of our jeans, our breath, our new bangs. We always know what's coming. Some of us will thrive. Some of us will crack. None of us will ever be the same.
So stop obsessing about your ex. We're always listening.

Review:

Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for sending me a review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was my first Sarah Mlynowski novel, I've heard a lot of hype surrounding her other novel Ten Things We Did and Probably Shouldn't Have so I eagerly accepted to review this novel.

I thought the plot of the book was very interesting. I don't think I've ever read a book about telepathy before so it was interesting to see how telepathy was written in the novel and how Mlynowski described it. I didn't read the blurb of the novel before starting it so I found it really interesting and enjoyable to enter into the book without knowing what it was about. As you would imagine, the telepathic teens run into a few problems over the course of the novel and there are a few plot twists thrown in for good measure. I didn't enjoy the ending of the novel but I felt the rest of the plot was good but not great.

The characters of the book were enjoyable but not great. I didn't really feel any strong connection to any characters in the novel apart from Cooper. Cooper was the only character I felt I knew enough about in the novel as I feel the rest of the characters are mentioned with a sort of detached atmosphere about it. Some of the characters are extremely cliched and boring which made me lose interest in them.

The writing style of the book was good. I have never read a Sarah Mlynowski novel before and so this was a new experience for me. I thought she wrote the telepathy into the novel very well, especially with the use of the third person perspective which was very interesting. I thought the pacing of the novel was a little slow overall but I feel like this was a good, light read .

Overall I'd recommend this book if you're looking for a light read, with nothing heavy. Also the telepathy scenes are pretty good. Let me know in the comments if I should check out Ten Things We Did- And Probably Shouldn't Have...
