ARC Review: Death & Co. by D.J Mc Cune

Plot -

Adam is a Luman, and it runs in the family. Escorting the dead from life into light, Adam must act as guide to those taken before their time. As his older brothers fall into their fate however, Adam clings to his life as a normal kid - one who likes girls, hates the Head and has a pile of homework to get through by Monday morning. When Adam gets a terrible premonition he realises that he must make a devastating choice, risking his life, his family and his destiny..

My Review:
I was sent this ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) from Easons Book Club, like their Facebook .
When I first read the synopsis of this novel, I felt like it reminded me a little of that Tv show Reaper that I watched.  I was a little excited to read this because I've never read a book about reapers or Lumen as they call them in this novel. This book was different to something I may pick up for myself but I enjoy reading out of my comfort zone.

The characters of this novel were good, but for me nothing special. The protagonist of the novel Adam didn't really go through any character development and that is something I usually enjoy in a novel. Overall I found Adam to be a bland, mediocre character. At first I thought his friends were really unique and realistic group of friends, one loving Anime, another loving computers and another loving Lord Of the Rings. I thought that it was going to be so fun reading about the friends because of their interests but I was disappointed as they were not mentioned in the novel as much as I'd have liked.  The love interest, Melissa, was sort of nothing. There was no appeal of her character for me. I didn't find her to be overly beautiful or kind or selfless or funny or anything at all. I felt like her character was put into the story for the purpose of having a love interest. I actually liked reading about Adam's older brother, Luc, who is getting up to some mischief that is not allowed in the Lumen society.
The plot of this book was different than I'd read before, I have never read many books about death or reapers. I was interested going into the novel but came out of it a little disappointed.  There was a lot going on in the plot, possibly too much. There were times when I became really excited because something was going to happen and then when it came to the part were it would reach its peak of excitement, it fell down and just lost my interest. This happened to me a lot in the novel and it really annoyed me. I felt the plot was a little all over the place and scattered, as if the author wanted to cover so many things that she did it all at once. I think I may have enjoyed the novel a little more if the plot was a little more focused and structured.
The writing style was in the third person which kind of made me feel distanced from the characters and the plot. The world of the Lumen society was interesting but I wish I learned more about it in the novel. An interesting subject was raised- the sexist rules of the Lumen society, not allowing women to become Lumen. I thought that this sounded really interesting but was disappointed when it was not addressed more in the novel. Overall I didn't think this book was as good as I had hoped it to be. I'm not sure if I will continue with the series, but I may pick up the second novel out of curiosity.
[This book is released on the 2nd of May 2013].
